Nir Felder Thanksgiving Trio w/ Matt Penman & Keith Carlock

November 27 & 28, 8pm

Celebrate Thanksgiving at Rudy’s with an extraordinary trio led by acclaimed guitarist Nir Felder, joined by two of the most distinguished musicians in contemporary jazz: bassist Matt Penman and drummer Keith Carlock. Together, these three internationally renowned artists bring their individual voices to the Rudy’s stage for a special Thanksgiving performance.

Called “the next big jazz guitarist” by NPR and hailed by The New York Times as a “whiz kid,” Nir Felder has emerged as a distinctive voice in modern jazz guitar, drawing equally from the worlds of jazz and rock. Raised just outside New York City, Felder spent his youth playing in rock bands while discovering jazz through artists ranging from John Coltrane to Jimi Hendrix. After attending Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, he moved to New York City in 2006 and quickly became one of the city’s most sought-after guitarists.

Felder has performed and recorded with an extraordinary range of artists including Diana Krall, Brad Mehldau, John Mayer, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Marcus Miller, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Dianne Reeves, Victor Wooten, Meshell Ndegeocello and Terri Lyne Carrington, appearing on Carrington’s Grammy-winning Money Jungle. His career has taken him across six continents and to stages including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Village Vanguard, along with numerous national television appearances.

As a leader, Felder made his major-label debut with Golden Age (Sony/OKeh), an acclaimed recording praised as “lyrical and lofty” by The New York Times and “mesmerizing” by The Boston Globe. His subsequent trio work has continued to blur the boundaries between jazz improvisation, rock, electronic sound and studio experimentation. Felder was named Rising Star Guitarist in the DownBeat Critics Poll in 2021 and 2023 and currently teaches at Berklee College of Music and The New School in New York City.

Matt Penman is one of the most acclaimed and in-demand bassists of his generation. Originally from New Zealand, Penman moved to the United States in 1994 to attend Berklee College of Music before settling in New York City, where he established himself as a formidable presence on the international jazz scene.

Penman is a founding member of James Farm, the celebrated collaborative quartet with Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks and Eric Harland, and was a longtime member of the all-star SFJAZZ Collective. His extensive performing and recording credits include work with John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Fred Hersch, Brian Blade, Madeleine Peyroux and many others. In addition to appearing on well over 100 recordings, Penman has released several projects as a leader and built a reputation for a deeply melodic approach, powerful groove and remarkable sensitivity as an improviser.

Keith Carlock is one of the most celebrated drummers of his generation, renowned for a singular combination of deep groove, technical command and explosive improvisation. A longtime drummer for Steely Dan, Carlock has also toured and recorded with Sting, John Mayer, James Taylor, Donald Fagen, Toto, Wayne Krantz, Chris Botti and numerous other leading artists across jazz, rock and pop.

Carlock’s unmistakable sound and extraordinarily fluid approach to the drum set have earned him widespread recognition among musicians and drummers worldwide. Modern Drummer readers voted him the magazine’s top Pop, Fusion and All-Around drummer in the same year, reflecting the remarkable versatility that has made him a first-call musician across genres. Equally at home driving a sophisticated groove or navigating open-ended improvisation, Carlock brings a distinctive musical voice to every setting.
